The Zumarraga Urban Route offers you the chance to stroll among the stalls of the Azoka and enjoy the products and producers of the area. It invites you to stroll through the streets and squares to get to know its particular history, to get to know Zumarraga as the birthplace of the trikitixa or as an important point of the wickerwork factories of Gipuzkoa. Climbing up to the hermitage of La Antigua brings back images of the past that characterise our character.
Points of interest
360 experiences
PUNTO 1
Azoka
The Azoka (local market) is the start of the route and the centre of the town. In the essence of the town, in that way the Urban Route will tell you about the curiosities of the town.
PUNTO 2
Former Itzalón Cinema
Behind the Azoka you will find the old Zumarraga cinema. It was vintage, but very modern for its time.
PUNTO 3
Mendia House (360º)
Just a few metres away is one of the most unique buildings in the town. The building was made by a local that made money in Cuba and then built the building.
PUNTO 4
Church of S.M. de la Asunción – The new church
You will then come to the new parish church. New yes, as this is the second parish church in Zumarraga. The Ermita de Santa María was the first, but how is it known today?
PUNTO 5
Monument in tribute to the trikitilaris
It is located on the roundabout in front of the church and has a long history behind it. The trikitixa was born in Zumarraga, that's all I have to say.
PUNTO 6
Itziar – Sculpture by Oteiza
A gift from Oteiza himself to the town of Zumarraga.
PUNTO 7
Area of wickerwork and Busca´s sculpture (360º)
The wickerwork was more important than expected. The surroundings of Eitzaga were full of wicker and wickerwork.
PUNTO 8
Joku-leku frontoia
San Gregorio Church and Joku-leku gable, they are the same building but with different uses.
PUNTO 9
Bailarako Panoramika (360º)
Continuing uphill you will soon reach the next point, so that half way up you can rest and see the views.
PUNTO 10
La Antigua Hermitage (360º)
The treasure of Zumarraga, even though it is not the town's patron saint, is the first church in the town. You must visit it to get a feel for La Antigua, you won´t regret it.
PUNTO 11
Interpretation Centre and regional tourist office
After climbing the slope and entering La Antigua you can enter the Interpretation Centre and discover the history of Zumarraga from there. The local tourist office is also there to answer any questions you may have.
PUNTO 12
Cementery – Angel’s crypt
You must go with respect to this place, this sculpture inside the cemetery teaches you things like the angel, the heaven and the hell…
